KERRY WASHINGTON ENDORSES CLINTON WHILE BEN CARSON CLAIMS OBAMA WAS “RAISED WHITE”

image

Proof there is no singular issue that will gain all the support of African-American voters, two very influential blacks show disparate views on politics. During a visit to the set of Scandal by Democratic frontrunner, Hillary Clinton, Kerry Washington Instagramed a pic with #ImWithHer, showing support for the former Secretary of State.

Ben Carson, the one-time frontrunner in the GOP race to the nomination, who is now in dead last, gave an interview in which he stated President Obama was “raised white.” The implication being he couldn’t possibly understand the struggle of everyday black Americans.

Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders who has struggled to gain endorsements from influential black political leaders or entertainers, scored one such endorsement from film director, Spike Lee. Like every culture or race, there is no defining issue that speaks to everyone in that group. But it’ll be interesting to see who can get the lion’s share of a vote that proved so influential to Obama’s wins.

MORGAN FREEMAN ENDORSES HILLARY CLINTON FOR PRESIDENT

image

In an interview with CNN’s Don Lemon, Academy Award winner, Morgan Freeman announced his support and endorsement ofHillary Clinton for President. When asked by Lemon, what are some of the major issues facing the country, Freeman pointed to security and income inequality.

Freeman’s public support in the interview serves to validate that he wasn’t just collecting a voice-over check in Clinton’s latest ad. In it Freeman intones, “Her life’s work has been about breaking barriers and so would her presidency, which is why for every American who’s not being paid what they’re worth, who’s being held back by student debt or a system tilted against them, and there are far too many of you, she understands that our country can’t reach its potential unless we all do.”

The ad debuted Friday on MSNBC and a longer version is set to begin airing in South Carolina just in time for the state’s Democratic primary.

IT’S A TKO AS NIKE TERMINATES MANNY PACQUIAO CONTRACT OF GAY REMARKS!

image

Manny Pacquiao suffered his latest knockout at the hands of his endorsement partner, Nike. The athletic company has terminated its contract with the struggling boxer after his comments that gay people were “worse than animals.”

Pacquiao made the comments while on the Senate campaign trail in the Philippines over the weekend. However, on Monday, the boxer tried to do a bit of damage control by apologizing for comparing gays to animals. He’s still firm in his beliefs that gay marriage is not okay. So rather than condemn the LGBT community,  he offered this, “God bless you all and I’m praying for you.”

Nike, a supporter of Gay rights and the Be True campaign issued the following statement, “Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community. We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao.”

The deal, worth a reported one million dollars per year won’t affect Manny too much. He’s still worth a reported two hundred million. But should he ever get that rematch with Mayweather, expect rainbow flags waving in the arena for another swift knockout!

LSDivas PRESENTS TRACEY ‘AFRICA’ NORMAN FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH!

image

Long before Caitlyn Jenner shocked the world when she transitioned from male, Olympic superstar; and before Laverne Cox began giving groundbreaking performances on Orange Is The New Black, Tracey ‘Africa’ Norman was the first Transgender model to be featured in major magazines and score lucrative product endorsements.

In the 1970s, Newark, New Jersey native, Tracey Norman quietly began transitioning after high school. As part of her “training” on becoming more feminine, Norman would pose as a fashion student and sneak into modelling casting calls to watch black models walk and copy their mannerisms. One day, she followed a group of black models into a building in what turned out to be a casting call for Italian Vogue.

Photographer, Irving Penn was ecstatic that he had just discovered the next Beverly Johnson. Tracey ended up working in Italy and Europe for years and even scored major product endorsement deals with Clairol and Ultra Sheen makeup. It wasn’t until many years later that the industry ‘caught on’ and her modelling career abruptly ended. But still stunning in her 60s, Tracey Norman paved the way for Trans women working in film, television and fashion today… Even if they never knew it!

CONGRATULATIONS, ASHLEY GRAHAM FOR REPPIN’ REAL WOMEN ON YOUR SPORTS ILLUSTRATED COVER!

image

Finally! We have a Diva on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s popular swimsuit edition who represents the beauty of real women all across the globe. While many say she is the first full figured model to grace the cover, we like to think of her as the first to fully represent what the majority of women’s bodies look like.

Graham has been a force on the fashion scene for some time now. She has modeled everything from skinny jeans to lingerie. But it is her confidence in knowing that regardless of what society tells women they should look like, she is happy, beautiful and healthy just the way she is.

Congratulations, Ashley. And thank you, Sports Illustrated for giving all women a cover model they can look up to!

PRESIDENT OBAMA HAS THE AUTHORITY TO APPOINT A TEMPORARY JUSTICE WHILE SENATE IS IN RECESS… SHOULD HE DO IT?

image

Child, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s body was barely cold when a chorus of nervous conservatives began advocating a block of any potential appointment. Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell immediately came out and said any attempt by President Obama to appoint a nominee should be blocked.

The circumstances surrounding the latest appointment have become highly political. Those on the right argue it’s unprecedented to nominate someone during an election year. While members on the left feel the country deserves to have a replacement in place as soon as possible.

The last time a justice was confirmed during an election year was when Reagan appointment, Kennedy was confirmed in February of 2008. Though he was nominated in November of 1987 after the first nominee was rejected.

Interestingly enough, the President has the authority to make temporary appointments during a Senate recess. This could potentially happen since the Senate is in recess through February 22nd. The questions are, should he; should he let the next president do it; and should the country be without a fully functioning Supreme Court Justice for more than a year?

LSDivas PRESENTS ALTHEA GIBSON FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH

image

Long before Venus and Serena Williams began dominating the world of women’s tennis, Althea Gibson became the first woman of color to win a Grand Slam Championship. The year was 1956 and Gibson not only won the French Open singles and doubles titles, but was a singles finalist at Wimbledon and won the doubles there as well.

It was through the support of her community and affluent and educated black men and women that served as mentors who helped Gibson achieve greatness in a sport that had been dominated by whites.

In 1957 Althea followed up her success with singles titles at Wimbledon and the US Open. At the time she would become not only the first black champion in Wimbledon’s 80 year history, but the first ever to have the trophy presented by the Queen of England.

During her illustrious career, Althea Gibson won 5 Grand Slam singles titles, 5 Grand Slam doubles titles, 1 mixed Grand Slam title and an additional 45 National and International titles. She was and always will be tennis’ first black superstar!

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF QUEEN BEY!

image

Say what you want about Beyoncé’s Halftime performance at the Superbowl, but we know executives at Red Lobster must be screaming for an encore!

With lyrics suggesting that if her man lays it down good in the bedroom, she’ll take him to Red Lobster, the restaurant chain saw it’s sales jump a whopping 33%. Now, there’s no way to confirm whether or not the sales increase was preceeded by a good f*ck. But, considering how hard the Beyhive rides for their Queen, we wouldn’t doubt it!

LSDivas PRESENTS JADEN SMITH FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH!

image

Some may question our decision to recognize someone so young as being influential during Black History Month. But considering Jaden Smith is the first Black man to ever be featured in a major fashion house’s women’s Ready-To-Wear campaign, we find it difficult not see it as groundbreaking.

Last year saw the celebration of all things LGBT in the form of Laverne Cox continually being revered for her work on ‘Orange Is The New Black’ and the media firestorm that is Caitlyn Jenner. But when Louis Vuitton cast Will and Jada’s son in a campaign where he donned the houses über expensive luxury clothing, many in the black community had something to say; and very little of it was positive.

We, on the other hand, applaud both Jaden and Vuitton for having the courage to challenge the notion of what is acceptable with regard to gender roles in today’s society. Jaden, love him or leave him, represents a segment of his generation that cares little about the rules society has long placed as what is or isn’t appropriate attire for men or women. And we love that about him! Oh, and that outfit is EVERYTHING!
